Why you still need a private locate after calling 811
811 stops at the meter
When you call 811, member utilities mark the lines they own — typically ending at the meter or property line. Gas lines from the meter to the house, power run out to a detached garage or shop, parking lot lighting and other privately installed lines aren't theirs to mark. On a lot of sites, those are the lines that get hit.
A strike stops the job
A hit line can mean a shutdown, repair bills, liability exposure and someone getting hurt. A private locate takes hours. Cleaning up after a strike can take weeks.
Colorado law & due diligence
Colorado's Underground Damage Prevention Law (C.R.S. 9-1.5) requires excavators to take reasonable precautions. A private locate is a documented step showing you did.
